Impact of Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems on Global and Interconnected Logistics

This chapter investigates the impacts of industrial cyber-physical systems (ICPS) on the evolution of contemporary logistics and supply chain management, on the levels of organization, decision-making and operations. More specifically, the potential of ICPS is explored for the new paradigm, namely Physical Internet being the Digital Internet metaphor, which advocates the interconnection and interoperability of global or local logistics networks and services. The application of ICPS in such a large-scale context will open up new opportunities and perspectives for research on, for example, network’s topology and interconnectivity and conceptualization of freight routing protocols in Physical Internet.
