Thierry Berger est Maître de Conférences en Automation et Informatique Industrielle à l'École d'Ingénieurs INSA Hauts-de-France sur le campus de l'Université UPHF de Valenciennes (France). Il est également membre du laboratoire de recherche LAMIH UMR CNRS 8201 de l'Université UPHF. Son activité de recherche est liée aux architectures de contrôle des systèmes de production flexibles, au produit actif, aux systèmes de transport, aux systèmes cyber-physiques reconfigurables, et est auteur/co-auteur de plusieurs publications dans ces domaines.
